SOHC Accelerator sticking at idle?

I'm not 100% sure but I think there was a recall for sticking throttle plates on these. You can probably get it fixed free by ford if that's the case. I'd definitely call a ford dealer and ask them about it.

It's not a common problem anymore since most have been recalled but when it first hit there were people who had their throttle body replaced 2 and 3 times because the new ones would start sticking just like the old ones. Since its part of the emissions system it is apparently not allowed for the dealer to just "fix it" by doing something simple like cranking the idle speed screw in half a turn and letting the Idle air control valve make up the difference.

Take the vehicle to your dealer and ask about -

"SAFETY RECALL 00S58 - Certain 1997-1998 Explorer and Mountaineer Vehicles Equipped with 4.0L SOHC Engine - Throttle Body Plate Sticking Closed"

If the recall has been performed, then i'd suggest that you lcean the goop out of the throttle body.

I don't think he has to settle for only one shot at getting it fixed. There might be a time/mileage limit though.

The recall fix is to replace the throttle body. I would guess that once this has been done, Ford will refuse to repalce it again (this is a guess). My 1997 Expedition had a simialr problem with throttle plate sticking. When it happened to me it was due to a build-up of black goop on the throttle body. I'd just clean the goop out with a rag soaked with WD-40. I am guessing that there was a more significant problem in the case of the Explorer - or maybe the problme just happen more frenquently. In the case of my Expedition the problem didn't occur the first time until around 60k miles.
