T Handle on Tailgate Spins Without Opening Lock

Hi, The rear door (tailgate?) t-handle on my 96 Ford Explorer is broken. The handle spins but does not operate the lock mechanism. Does anyone know how to repair this? I cannot open the back door! Thanks,
