triton 4.6 litre install

Jun 13, 2004 1 Replies

Question: Can a 4.0 litre SOHC engine in a 2 wheel drive 1999 Ford Explorer XLT with trailer tow package (3.73 rearend) be replaced with a 4.6 litre SOHC engine? Is this more trouble than it's worth? Reasons considering: Now towing a trailer weighing in @ about 3800 lbs with about 450 lbs tongue weight (about 2/3 of spec'd tow capacity)

Any replies would be appreciated.

Thanks, Hergi.

The 4.6 wasn't offered in the Ex until 2002.... while the engine might be nearly a bolt in (well, almost nearly) the electronic nightmare waiting quietly on the sidelines would make payments on a brand new Excursion seem painless. Not a simple harness and PCM swap since data acquisition and handling is just too different betwixt the two systems.

Sorry, I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear...
