5.0 to 4.6?

When did Mustang GTs made the transition from having 5.0 liter engine to

4.6 liter engine? Besides having more horsepower, is 4.6 better in other ways? Thanks alot

The 5.0 is ancient design going back to the 1970s, and the engine design didn't lend itself to putting the same engine (block) in many different FoMoCo products. Hence, the 4.6L "modular" design was born. See:

Shirley, you jest... designed in the late 50s for 1962 release is more like it...

and the engine design didn't

Oh, it fit... just about everything, from Pintos & Fairmonts, to Lincolns, Explorers, & F-Series, (all RWD or AWD, however)but was becoming very difficult to get it to pass smog requirements. The 4.6 stepped right in & passed easily, even w/o AIR plumbing & pumps.
