The 5.0 is ancient design going back to the 1970s, and the engine design didn't
lend itself to putting the same engine (block) in many different FoMoCo
products. Hence, the 4.6L "modular" design was born. See:

Oh, it fit... just about everything, from Pintos & Fairmonts, to
Lincolns, Explorers, & F-Series, (all RWD or AWD, however)but was
becoming very difficult to get it to pass smog requirements. The 4.6
stepped right in & passed easily, even w/o AIR plumbing & pumps.
