Engin coolig fans

hi all, ford focus 1.8 zetec with climate pack, have noticed that the engine cooling fans turn on sometimes when starting the car other times they come on after a couple of miles when car is nearing operating temperature. have just had car checked out by ford who say this is due to having heater set to front screen causing aircon to come on. i`m totally confused as to how the engine fans cause the screen to be demisted. Can anybody shed some light on this?

When the blower switch is set to the windscreen only position the Air Conditioning kicks in "The A/C extracts humidity from the air and the windows are demisted faster."

Your car will have two cooling fans - one associated with the engine temperature and the other associated with the A/C. If the A/C is automatically switched on I'm not surprised that one of the fans would switch on.

"Front screen defrosting/demisting Set the air distribution control to (icon = the windscreen position). Outside air will flow into the vehicle.. As long as the air distribution control is set to (icon = the windscreen position) re-circulated air cannot be selected and the air conditioning will be turned on automatically. Make sure that the blower is on."

The quotes are from page 37 of the UK owners manual circa 2001

The A/C uses the engine cooling fan and reduces humidity which speeds defrosting and defogging.
