I was looking at getting a newer used Ford Ranger 4.0L or Mazda B4000 extended cab 2 wheel drive truck. I have read that the gas mileage is almost the exact same with the 3.0L and the 4.0L so might as well go with the bigger one - right?
Here is the question. I read that the compression on the 4.0L is 9.7:1 - This is really high yet they say it can run on regular fuel. What do you guys find? Are your engines pinging on regular. What is everyone using for gas in these? Comments......
9.7:1 isn't "high" compression. If the users manual says to burn regular fuel, that's what you should burn. It's a waste of money to burn higher octane than you need.
I have a 1997 B4000 with the 4.0L engine; I use regular gas, never have had any pinging.

9.7:1 isn't high compression.I have a friend that has the 4.0L Ranger (2001 or 2002 I think) and he says he burns regular also and finds it okay. Good to know you guys aren't having a problem. Currently I have a 9.5:1 4 cylinder car and it says to run on regular but it makes a high pitch pinging sound when under heavy acceleration. When on a higher grade of gas it goes away 'mostly'. I have to admit though, I don't agree with the statement that 9.7 isn't a high compression to run on 'Regular 87 Fuel' though. If it is working though, I won't complain and put in the cheaper stuff if I buy the vehicle.
