$ 7.55 Can. Ford Oil Filter? Ouch

Just bought some Ford Brand 400-S Filters for my F150, 4.2. Got sick of goofing around with the off-brands / dept store brands. Most were good but some didn't thread/seal properly etc. The 400-S says "Long Life" on it, and I must say the thing looks pretty beefy compared to the others I've spec'd and bought for the truck.

Question- I change the oil every 3K or so, would it be Ok to change the filter every second time if the combined 2 oil changes equalled say, 6-7 K? The 400S is about twice the price of Frams etc, but if I could use it twice and get superior service, I might consider sticking with them. Cutting the oil change time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes kind of appeals to me too.

What do you guys think?

I bought a Motorcraft 400-s for my Ranger, and paid less for it than the Fram.

This was Walmart, though.

An issue to consider with not changing the filter. There is a LEAST a half quart of dirty oil in those things. Why not pay the extra 3 bucks and just be done with it? Thats about the equivalent of going without a six-pack one night in three months or so.

$7.55? Seems expensive to me....is that Canada money?

Anyway, Ford brand filters use to be made by Allied Signal, and may still be. Ford brand and Motocraft brand are probably the exact same filter as Fram, also Allied Signal.

I wouldn't use a Fram, unless it was the only filter available. Wix brand is my choice for oil filters. IMO, Wix is superior to any other oil filter. Changing oil filters at 3000mi intervals is the smart thing to do, in any case!

I think you're #1. going to the wrong place for a filter, and #2. being a cheapskate. I pay three something for the 400S myself.

I can't remember the last time I bought an oil filter so I can't tell you what they cost. What I can tell you is that it costs me between 50 and 60 bucks (CDN) every 5000 km to have my Ranger pickup serviced at the local dealer. Considerably more expensive than doing my own oil changes (and yes I'm more than capable of doing them) but I think of it as cheap insurance. Anytime I take the vehicle in for any sort of warranty work and the service department asks if this, that or the other thing was done. I just ask them to check their records because if it was a requirment then I paid them to do it. I've followed a lot of threads in this NG and heard a lot of complaints about "Fords" warranty. I have never had a problem with their warranty and I'm on my 4th "Ford" product. In short who cares if an oil filter costs $7.55 CDN. You'd spend that on a couple of beers and be pissing them out in

20 minutes.

Not true - Ford brand switches between Purolator and Champion Labs (off brand kings). If you look into the Fram, and look into the Ford, you'll see it's not the same thing.

I have heard lots of people recommend not changing the filter (People like Smokey Yunick, I mean) because it really doesn't catch much of anything if you're changing your oil every 3000 miles. Curious folks have sawed them apart and found there's not much of anything caught in there.

What is not true in my post?? You failed reading comprehension, didn't you? If you are 'looking' for stuff in a used oil filter, you won't see anything since an oil filter is doing its job at the MICRON level! I sincerely doubt Yunick ever recommended not changing the oil filter when changing oil at the 3K mark. That's just a stupid thing to say.......

How can you tell which oil filters are better than others? The filter must provide adequate flow and filter down to a specified size particle to be approved. As long as it does that and it fits and seals properly isn't it doing all that is required of it?

What makes one filter so much better than another?

A few things such as area size of paper filter material, pleats, etc...But the main reason I won't use a stock orange fram filter is the sorry anti drainback checkvalves they have. I don't know about the higher priced frams...The only filter I use on my old 300 six is the motorcraft FL1A. It's a very good filter that is made by purolator, and is fairly cheap. There is a website that has gobs of filter comparison data, but I forgot where it is...Not all filters are alike, that is for sure. MK
