I was driving along and my truck started bucking and backfiring in the middle of rush hour traffic. Luckily I made it to the right shoulder just after a bridge but the engine would no longer start. When I turn it over it sounds like the timing is off but i checked it after I had it towed home and now i have no idea what else it could be??? Anyone have any ideas...

Did it run out of gas? Is the fuel pump working?
Which engine? How did you check the timing?

If it has the distributerless ignition, check the crank trigger. I know this sounds a little improbable, but I had to replace the one on my old '89 Ranger 3 times before I sold it. It didn't go out the first time until after
100,000 miles and the symptoms were almost identical to the ones you describe.Good Luck,
