93 F-150 AC Clutch will not engage

I have a 1993 F-150 with a 5.0 liter engine. When I turn on the AC theclutch on the compressor does not engage. I checked the fuse under thedashboard and it is OK. I thought I might luck out and find that the systemwas low on R134 (the previous owner had it converted from the old typeFreon).Bought a can of 134, system took a little it, and the gauge on the rechargekit measured in the "full" range at 35 psi.Is it possible for me to diagnose/replace a bad compressor clutch or shouldI just bite the bullet and take it to an AC shop?Thanks

Actually the switch has an operating range. It turns on at around 40 or so and opens again somewhere in the 20's like an air compressor control except the reverse. If the system constantly maintains this 35 psi after it has been opened at low pressure it will not get high enough to close again. Stabilized static pressures in a dead system should be more in the 100+ psi range unless the ambient temps are quite cool in which case he won't be needing a/c..
