93 Ranger rear axel leak

I could use some advice. I changed the rear axel gasket last year and now it is leaking again. I don't remember what kind of gasket cement I used and I did not buy the gasket from Ford. I am thinking to buy a Ford gasget this time and use there cement. Any advice on this axel cover??

Are you talking about the differential cover on the rear "axle"? Or the pinion seal, or the axle shaft end seals?

The differential cover !

You don't need a gasket, just be sure the cover is clean, put a GOOD bead, consistent thickness, all the way around, starting and ending at the top of the cover. Let it set up for 6-7 minutes, then apply, with even pressure as you tighten the bolts, in a cross pattern, like you would a wheel.

I use the orange Permatex brand stuff, some use blue, but I never use a gasket on the diff cover.

No Gasket ? OK I will try that as on disassembly I notice the gear oil has gone thru the gasket, or it appears that way. Is there an oil brand you like for Limit slip axels? My useless Chilton's says something about 4 oz. of special Ford friction modifier.

Oh, Thank You !

Nope, no gasket.

I like Kendall, and Mobil oils. There are a lot of good quality oils out there.

Likewise with the friction modifier additive you put in there, too. Ford is as good as any, probably made by Valvoline, but they won't tell.

I guess this answer is kind of vague, but as long as you use a good quality product, you'll get what you pay for.

Good luck,

Last Question ! What does the Friction Modifier Do beside modify friction? I mean when I drive up a 15% grade of gravel with very little weight in the back will it keep me from tearing up my road? I am hoping you'll say yes but I probably should leave those 100LB barbells back there...........

It allows the clutches in the limited slip to "unlock" or slip a little when you turn so you won't get the chatter in the rear diff, and won't wear tires and drivetrain so bad.

The symptom you are describing going up the hill is "traction hopping". Weight in the rear like your barbells, sand, etc, and lower tire pressure, are the only two things I know to help that.

You ought to experience it in an unloaded tandem dump truck that weighs

24,000lbs.

Good luck dude,

I think I know what you mean. It happened when the 5th cement truck left after pouring the pad. I know the gasket thing was pretty basic but I have been out of repairs by me for awhile! Thank-you and take care Amigo !
