95 Econoline Shudder at gear change

I have a 95 Econoline with an automatic overdrive tranny, and it shudders when changing gears, not always, usually only when at full or near full throttle. I have replaced the Universal Joints and it did not make any difference. I can determine that the vibration is from the front of the drivetrain. Any suggestions. It only has 45,000 miles.

The cause is likely torque converter shudder. This is especially true if you have not had the trans serviced properly which will include draining the converter. You have either an AODE or an E4OD trans. Either trans may possibly be helped or cured with a complete service which includes a new filter and draining the torque converter. The AODE will need about 13 qts for a refill - the E4OD will need about 16qts. Added insurance can be had by adding 2 bottles of LubeGard with the fresh fluid. Another product that works well is Shudderfix which comes in a tube. The longer you allow this condition to continue, the more likely it is that converter replacement will be required. If you have the AODE trans, you should install an updated converter solenoid while the pan is off. The updated solenoid provides for quicker lockup of the converter reducing the opportunity for it to shudder. It is available in the aftermarket or on the net for under $20US.
