'98 E-350 trany problem

I had the van towed to the trany shop so, the post is kinda' moot but...This was such a strange failure, it's got my curiosity. The van just felt funny shifting on the 15 mi. drive home from work after getting off the highway. At stop lights, it would take a bit of gas for the trany to "engage". It didn't seem to go into gears at the proper times, shifting seemed late and didn't seem to go into OD. I stopped at a gas station and really couldn't read the dip stick's little plastic tip. I added a quart. It didn't smell or look burnt. It seemed to drive a bit better the rest of the way home. The next day I test drove it for a few miles and it seemed perfect. A few hours later, it wouldn't move at all. It didn't feel like slipping, it just wouldn't engage. The funny thing is that while in "PARK", the motor surges and stutters, while in "NEUTRAL", it is disengaged. I'm sure I'll find out this week but, any thoughts? Could it be just electronic in nature? There are only 46k on the 5.6L Triton van and it has been a perfect performer and never abused.
