I read through the littlegreenfootballs blog and frankly I'm not too impressed. When I do their suggested comparisons between the CBS PDF files and a recently printed Word document at a 5x enlargement, the differences are obvious. Much of the letter spacing matches reasonably closely, but the vertical alignment of letters is way too irregular in the PDFed memo for at least a modern word-processor laser-printed document. As for the superscript nonsense, my secretary back in the mid-70s had a typewriter with standard fraction and superscript keys. I disliked the appearance of the special keys and instructed her not to use them on my correspondence. Come to think of it, I think my old Smith Corona electric portable from the 70s also may have had superscript keys. I'll have to go dig it out of the storage and check some day.

So far as I'm concerned, that doesn't mean the documents couldn't have been faked, but it would be a much more sophisticated fake than the uneducated conjectures of the greenfootballers have suggested.

In any event the details are less important than the fact that we have an administration carrying us into war that's largely composed of people who never served in the military, at least not in combat, versus a candidate who under whatever circumstances did serve in combat and had the character and courage to express unpopular convictions when he returned.

And even that to me appears to be mostly red herring bait to gloss over the fact that our present administration has spent a lot of our political, social and financial capital with very little sense of the consequences, especially the consequences for our children.

Might depend on the ball you've got installed. Up until a few years ago, I used an IBM Selectric II typrewriter here in the office. I had about a dozen different balls for the thing depending on which typeface I wanted to use and what symbols I might want. I don't recall if the superscript "th" was on any of 'em tho.

I've been dealing with typography in various media since about 1962, starting with accurately hand-drawing Baskerville Old Face for a college poster design project. The overlay comparisons of an entire page of text being trumpeted on the blog don't mean hooey. Do the same overlay of any individual word enlarged about 5 times, displayed translucently and aligned for width -- you find among other things that there is a different

As for the proportional font and superscript letters, they were both available on the early IBM desktop publishing typewriters. My office had one because they were available with mag card memory, which was a real cost-saver when you were editing and printing largely repetitive specifications and especially preprinted forms. My guess is the military had them for much the same reason.

None of this proves whether or not the documents were forged. I'd guess it might take me several hours on my office computer in CorelDraw and Paintshop Pro to *exactly* reproduce the PDF file image, all the way down to the copier speckles, with each letter, word and line accurately sized, proportioned, spaced and aligned. But that still would not show that the memos CBS has obtained weren't entirely legitimate.

I got out of the service in 1965 and if any one of the fellows I served with were to bump into me on the street I'm sure I wouldn't recognize him. The only person I can remember from more than 8 years service is a guy I roomed with named Russ Williams, nephew of Hank Williams the country singer and a great Polak buddy in Germany. Were it not for that I don't think I could recall hardly anyone from that period. You must also remember that this was the National Guard, not active duty where people interact daily. Guys come in for weekend duty, and seldom at the same time each month. Since GW was transferred from Texas to Alabama (I believe) I doubt seriously other National Guard pilots would have paid much attention to him. But of course his commanding officer knew who he was and that he was there. His dental records prove that much. BTW where are Kerry's records for the balance of the three years he served? He refuses to release those records (like GW did) and remember, he was originally suppose to serve six years...not three! No one seems to want to know how he got out of those final three years of service. Oh yes, that's right. He was in France meeting with the enemy (North Vietnamese) and putting down the guys he left behind in Nam while GW was still serving out his 5 years, 4 months and 5 days. BTW Kerry also applied for a deferment and was turned down. Don't hear that from the Dems, do you? Also, in case your interested GW piloted the F-102, not an easy plane to fly. It was also being phased out in favor of the F-106, also a delta-winged fighter. Since his type of plane was to be retired they were letting those pilots go who decided not to re-up for another 4-6 years, a requirement if you wanted to become proficient in another type of fighter aircraft. Reason: Why keep a pilot around who was proficient in a soon-to-be-retired aircraft. It would have been stupid to keep him around and check him out (that's service-speak for training) in another type of plane. Also, as a National Guard member you were only required to attain a total of 50 points of service time each year. GW had something like 250 his first year, over 300 the second, another 200+ the third year and something like 65+ his final two years. Commitment satisfied! Any serious questions? Please keep them coherent and on point.
