DO CRANK SENSORS GO BAD VERY OFTEN?

93 Mustang 4 cylinder stopped dead and left me stranded on highway. Had to get towed to garage.

They told me crank sensor failed.

$318.00!

Does this sound right?

Do these go bad all of a sudden very often like this?

It's a little high, but totally unreasonable if it includes the tow. They don't fail "often". It's 13 years old. It was probably just it's time.

Make that NOT totally unreasonable...

They go bad often on the Jeep Cherokee's with the inline six. Not so much of a problem on Ford's.
