head gasket job on 85 F-350 6.9 diesel

Got one out on the lot for head gaskets

Driven by a 17-year old high-school kid...........when I asked Momma (who's paying the tab, $2209 estimate) 'why ?', she replied; 'Oh, he just HAD to have it, it's big and blue and has shiny chrome wheeels'

It looks like one of those 'Texas Gusher' movies when you take off the radiator cap......oily sludge like a continuous Old Faithful

Anybody done this job, anything to watch out for, other than the usual Ferd crap ?

Don't touch the injector tips. If you leave the injectors in the head then remove, don't lay the head on the combustion surface, the injector tip may stick out just a fraction, then...... make that a head gasket and a new set of injectors. I only rebuild industrial diesels but I imagine these automotive applications are quite similar, only smaller.

it's out and apart, gasket 1/3 blown around # 8, with about a half inch gone in the ring on # 6

heads at machine shop for magnafluxing, surfacing, and valve touch-up

pulled injector pump and all lines in one piece, after finding firing point on # 1 and marking injector drive gear position thru hole where cam sensor goes (just a plug in this one)

not hard to work on, but one big-ass piece of iron

pulled it cause pan gasket needs replaced and also head bolts on passengers side are about an inch from heater box.........amd after lifitng the heads off, was glad I didn't try to yank them off in the truck

Just FYI, you can't engage that pump with the drive gear wrong. No need for marking. But better safe than sorry if you didn't know.

A big assed rubber band works good to hold those bolts under the heater box also.
