anybody know what causes this, or is it relatively normal? i have a 98 ford ranger with about 143k miles on it. never noticed oil before when i've changed it.

You never had 143K on it before either. You have reached a marker along the highway to engine self-destruction. Let's hope there's a ways to go yet. This will not repair itself.
ok, but what is the cause of it?
Well, some are going to say the PCV is bad and to change it. That's a good idea in any case. With that mileage the likely cause is simple blowby the oil rings. You have too much crankcase pressure. The ventilation system is overpowered. Just keep cleaning everything and keep up the oil level. You could go an awful long time.
