Oregon Ford Truck Dealer Recommendation

I think that my research is better than yours. My research was done at:

Only residents of 6 states are eligible for the sales tax exclusion. Those states are: Oregon, Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Colorado, and Delaware. My new residence will not be one of those states. Oregon's and Montana's income taxes are way to high for my taste.

10 years ago I gave my brother a car worth at least $5K. He didn't have to pay a sales tax then. The King County employee acted like they didn't believe that it was a gift, but since they couldn't prove otherwise they accepted it. I went with my brother to transfer the title. I think they said that you can't gift the car more than once. By the way, I didn't lie, it really was a gift. I don't know if the rules are the same under todays law.

I think you have not researched the laws closely enough. Maybe you should call a tax office or the DOR for accurate information.

I did not state that you would get a sales tax exclusion in WA, you won't. Lets say you're moving to Idaho. If you drive into WA and buy a car you will not pay WA sales tax on the vehicle. You will have to buy a trip permit to get your rig to your state. When you go to the appropriate agency in the state you live in you will pay sales tax there. That's the way it works. Period. Call the agency like I did.

If you drive into WA from Idaho and buy a washing machine, or building materials or darn near anything else, you will pay sales tax. Period.

If you drive into WA from NV and buy a car, truck, RV of any kind you will not pay WA sales tax. When you take the rig to your home state (NV) to license it you will pay sales tax in your home state. That's just the way it works. You cannot avoid sales tax just by driving to OR, you will have to register the vehicle when you get home and that's where will pay the tax.

If, as you state on your caustic reply to Ralph that the sales tax in your new state is 3% that is what you will pay when you take the rig home. Don't believe me, call the DOR at 1-800-647-7706 like I did.

Sounds like your research is different than my research. I've walked into dealerships and they've all told me that they would have to charge me sales tax. I go to the WA state web site and they list the 6 states whose residents don't have to pay sales tax in WA and my future state is not among them. Yet somehow I'm supposed to believe that information published by the state is wrong and that dealers are wrong, and someone on an internet newsgroup is right. Forgive me if I sound skeptical of your position, but I'd rather believe something published by the state.

Why don't you call the damn state office. I gave you the number.

Crap, forget it you know too much to learn.

Washington's web page does not clearly explain one important thing:

The merchant has two choices:

  1. Charge sales tax.

  1. Document that the purchaser is from a tax-exempted state, not collect the sales tax, and maintain documentation of the tax-free sale with a copy of the ID of the purchaser.

Repeating: It is the merchant's choice.

My choice when I was a merchant in Washington: You help make the potholes; you can pay the sales tax.

Only two entities are entitled by law to purchase items sales-tax-free in Washington. They are the American Red Cross and the United States Government (when the government is directly paying for the goods; reimbursable purchases don't count).

I gotta go with Bob's take on this issue as the items he's outlined have also been my experience. If you really want to avoid paying sales tax, "move" to OR for a day, get a PO Box and an OR driver's license, buy your truck, register/license it in OR. When you move to your new state simply transfer the OR title and get a new driver's license. There is probably even a grace period before you are required to have a valid driver's license and registration in your "new" state. Even with the added, extraneous expense of registration/DL in OR I bet you come out ahead.

BTW, in May when I was shopping for a new truck, I found one in Utah that fit my requirements (I'm in Idaho). While talking with the salesman I asked about the sales tax issue. He referred me to the finance manager who said, "No problem, we'll just forward the purchase information to the DMV in Boise, they will collect the sales tax when you register the vehicle..."

Our problem at Vancouve Ford (and my friends) may have been a particular salesperson(s). In my case, the salesman would NOT stop calling my home even after we bought elsewhere! (I know, I know, I'll never give my number out again!)

That's just plain rude. Although I don't mind my salesman calling to make sure everything is okay.

Landmark Ford, Tigard, OR. 503 639 1131 They have to be one of the best. Have bought two [new, stock] from them and would have bought a third [used] but didn't have what I wanted. I also give them all of my service work and don't have a gripe about it. The salesman name is Tom Rayner. Gives it to you straight with no bull.

Stay away from Thomason/Damerow or what ever their name is now. How they stay in business is past me.

Also have heard good things about Canby Ford.

Good Luck Bob S.

Again, my post is probably too late since we have been traveling and not accessed this newsgroup for a few months. Dick's MacKenzie Ford in Hillsboro, OR is excellent. Ask for Kris Brady (my daughter) and tell her you know her mom and she will direct you to the best salesman for your needs. ;)

Canby Ford is a pack of idiots, it would be over rating their service department to call them incompetent. They will not even consider selling a Ford for under MSRP. I have never paid MSRP or higher yet...

Try this family owned Ford dealer is McMinnville, OR. Chuck Colvin Auto Center They deal with a lot of trucks...

I buy my vans through US Vans there. They deal through Newberg Ford. For a van, you get the vehicle at cost and then US Vans does a modification to your specs. Probably the cheapest but nicest vehicles I have owned. On my second now.
