Should be a 71. Sound about right? D=70's decade. 1 = year. 1971... MK

Looks like a 71-73 400cid that should have 2v heads and the narrow bell housing. Best I can do.

roller rockers are not a factory item--your casing number is for a 400 year

There was/is no 400 ford with a small block bh pattern. The 351 Modified and the 400 use the 429/460 big block bellhousing pattern.

Steve, You are also mistaken! There have been pictures posted on the internet of this mythical 351M/400 with the small block transmission bolt pattern. There were some produced in the first few years of the engines production.

Do a little searching and I'm sure you will find the posts... Or ask over at alt.hi-po.big-block-ford-mercury, someone there posted the pictures.

Well it would be news to me that's for sure. Can't imagine what engine family this might be. I think "mythical" is the key word here. I'm open for links, and pictures.

Could someone please post those pictures or links again?

Before or after I kick your ass for crossposting to AHPBBFM? Here they are, including a shot of the block number that matches the original poster's inquiry. No more crossposting after this. 4 pics in this folder:

This rare block has been discussed extensively at the Cleveland forum, where those pictures were first posted.

Those were courtesy of a guy who goes by the name CjjTulsa. Cool that you posted them.

Folks, these blocks are very rare in the west. They seem to come up more in the east. If you see a 1972-1974 Ford in the boneyard with a 400, hop up on the fender and see if it's got a small bell behind it. They aren't worth a whole lot, but they are pretty cool, and it's much easier to get a 5 speed or an AOD behind a 400 if it has the small bell. Well, this is mainly for car apps. Still, if nothing else it would make a nice side table stand.

Hi, I have one of these blocks in the garage, once had it bolted in a '78 stick Mustang with all stock parts. Battery was moved to back and exhaust was next to impossible. Always wanted to use 4 barrel Cleveland heads on this motor, eventually used CJ cam and Edelbrock with Holley
