Ford 1997 F150 4x4 5.8 motor. 125K I want to keep this truck and have decided to do most repairs myself. Won't engage to 4x4 ,very rough low idle and service lamp is on. I might have more than one problem. I need advice on brand or features in a electronic code reader which will aid tin trouble shooting the truck. Thanks in Advance DC

Never mind - it's an OBD II as originally stated.

I would just take it to one of the local auto parts stores (had great success with this recently). Most will offer the scanning for free if that nasty old check engine light comes on.
