What is it?

Question

The speedo went out on my truck*. It seems to be a broken cable problem and not a big deal. It seems that the cable is a 2 part system with an unusual connector in between the 2 cables. It looks like it is some sort of sensor for the cruise control. Long story short, the internals of this sensor are frozen up and caused the longer of the two cables to shear off the tip. The part in question doesn't show up in my manual, but it has the Ford oval and D4AF-9E731 cast into it. I tried Googling the number but got no hits. What is it?

Any suggestions on the fix? I does not appear to be easy to get into to repair. Bypassing is going to take a much longer cable assembly and I haven't a clue as what to use.

Since it isn't a common part and is kinda old it is probably an expensive special order item. The other option is heading to a pick your part wrecking yard and I was wondering what other Ford products this sensor might have been used on?

Have you tried the auto parts store for a long cable housing? It might be cheaper than you think.

I would imagine the sensor must be for cruise, but you didn't mention whether your truck has cruise or not. Since the truck has a manual tranny and a carburetor, it really couldn't be much else, could it?

Another option is Green Sales Co.....I think they have a website. Anyway, these folks buy-up old dealer inventories and don't charge high prices. I keep my '81 maintained and a few times I've needed some pieces that I just couldn't find. This company had them. Another place to look would be LMC truck. This company also carries OEM stuff for older trucks. Also have a website.

Your part number is an engineering or casting part number and is not the part number the replacement part would be sold under.

D4 = 1974, the part was designed for a 1974 project A = Full size Ford Car F = ? (probably an engineernig designation)

9E731 = speed sensor group P/N

So it seems like your item is some sort of speed sensor originally released for a 1974 full size Ford car. This doesn't mean that it wasn't used on many vehicles for multiple years, just that it was originally designed for a 1974 Full Size Ford. And the actual serive part number will be different than the engineering P/N on the unit.
