Just push the OnStar button, they can tell you any codes that are set.
All cars manufactured after 1996 or 1997 are supposed to have an OBDII connector. You will need a scan tool to get the codes though. The earlier versions of the OBD all you had to do is jumper two wires. There are scanners like this on ebay. Also Harbor Freight tools has a few models to select from. Hope this helps.
