97 Olds LSS Trans slips

My 97 Olds trans slips only going up long steep hills, in high gear. It has 97 k on it now. The Transmission shop says its the torque converter, and he
can fix it for $600. Or he can redo the whole trans for $1400. Anybody have any good advice or experience on this subject? Thanks

If he scans it with a trans capable scanner he can see either codes leading to the problem or he can command the tcc on and see slippage in the convertor right on the scanner, he can also check for slippage in the other gears, that coupled with a pressure test of the pump will give you a much more accurate analysis of what needs to be done. If the fluid is burnt at this point an overhaul may be in order anyway.

If this slipping is trans related then a trans capable scanner can detect a related code and even command the tcc on to check for any slippage in any gear for that matter. This and a pressure test will determine the extent of the repairs necessary.
