A poll!

You have just taken delivery of a 1979 Series II XJ6L. The paint job is poor and the interior needs to be re-done as well. It is currently painted red (with a large orange based tint) and has a beige/biscuit interior.

A.) Do you keep it Red with a biscuit interior?

B.) Do you keep it Red and install a black interior

C.) Do you paint it British Racing Green and install a biscuit interior?

D.) Do you paint it British Racing Green and install a black interior?

I am leaning towards B with C as a number two choice. Lets hear it Boys and Girls!

Terry, You have two options here.

The first is to sent off $50 to JDHT and get the original colours for the interior and exterior of the car as well as the build history. Then you take $6,000 to $7,000 and do a professional paint job to the exterior of the car. You then take another $3,000 to $4,000 and re-do the interior back to original in the original color. Then take another $4,000 to re-do the carpets and mechanicals back to original.

When you are all said and done, you will have invested about $15,000 into the car to bring it back to showroom condition and classic Concourse quality. After you have done all that, the car will be worth about $7,000 book value.

Your other option is to paint it any colour you like for it really doesn't matter. Personally, I did my 420 in dark blue with a camel interior.

I shudder at your suggestion that I would invest in a restoration for purely economic investment, lol.

The car is purely for my pleasure. Some people waste money at Vegas, I spend it at collision shops!!!!

If you paint it a different color then are you going to also paint the door shuts, under the hood, in the trunk, etc? If not then I'd keep it red. I realise changing the color everywhere will cost $$$$$$.

Having owned several XJs with different color interiors I would go with a light color. Black (for me) just makes the interior too dark and closed in. If you have the opportunity, sit in some other XJs with different interiors and see what you think. Black is OK in open cars, in fact my XKE roadster has a black interior but I usually drive it with the roof down so don't get the dark effect.
