just converted and they look brill, when full beam is switched on, is it normal for the dipped lights to go out? then come back on when full beam is switched off

Yes. Either dipped OR full beam.

I don't know if it is different where you are, but my XJ40 with quads has just 2 lights on for low beams and then all 4 instantly when I go to high. It remains that way until I go to low. So with full beam on, all four headlamps are light.
