Went to the JDCA Display Day in Sydney last weekend and saw a beautiful Mk2 that made me a little embarrassed by mine. This car had an idea that I thought should be a step forward in the battle against heat build up in the engine bay. The exhaust manifold had been lagged with something looking like woven fabric (glassfibre presumably) and an XJ6 heat shield had been fitted over the top which looked very neat as well. Any thoughts on the pro's and cons of this?
I hate it when someone else's Jaguar outshines mine too.
Yes, heat wraps have been around for awhile now but have lost popularity because of thermal barrier ceramics. Thermal barrier ceramics can be applied inside the manifold and heat dispersant ceramics applied to the outside. This work out nicely.
Back to heat wraps -
Heat wraps, like ceramics, keep exhaust gasses at higher temperatures which translates into higher gas velocity and better exhaust scavenging. In short the exhaust is pulling itself out of the cylinder instead of being pushed out by the piston; better efficiency and power.
The downside is accelerated rust. The wrap wicks moisture out of the air and helps to fuel the corrosion process when the car is not being driven. I like wraps and they do work, however I recommend that you seek out a ceramic coater in your area and consult with them about thermal barriers, heat dispersants, and moly coatings.
I used two rebuild my 2 cycle cafe racer every 5k miles. Since I switched to thermal barriers, dispersants, and film lubrication coatings, my power stays longer, runs smoother, and have gone 10k miles without any significant wear!!! Thank you NASA!
Thanks for the responses. Even better than I thought. I've found the Australian distributor for the heat wrap via your lead. Since I'll only lag the manifold, and it's enamelled, I shouldn't have corrosion issues. Thanks again. GrahamL
