Lighting woes

Hi All.

I got problems with lights on my UK 1988 XJS. Here's the symptoms :-) Front lights - No Probs Drivers side - No Probs Turn on side lights and bulb failure comes on even though all lights are working as they should. Left hand indicate only and no probs. This applies to left hand rear only Left hand indicate with side lights on and flasher works, side light will dim and go bright alternating with the flasher, and the brake light will flash just a little tiny bit. Left hand indicate with side lights on and break lights and the side light and break light will flash alternating with the flasher. the flasher light is dim and the left side fog lamp will also flash but will be dim.

If I have the lights on and the rear fog lamps on, the the left hand fog lamp is dimmer than the right side. But, if I give power to the fog lamps (Via a bit of wire) to the fog lamps without the lights on then the fog lamps both shine bright.

With the lights on, the only way I can get the bulb failure to go out is to pull the light coloured wire from both bulb failure units in side the boot. Just pulling either one off does not turn the bulb failure off.

Is there any test I can do to find out where the problem lies?

Thanks

Ivar

Found it. Bad earth. As in earth wire connected to nothing. I would have thought that no earth means no lights at all. but there you go.

It earths through the second filament of the stop/tail lamp hence the fancy displays when indicating.
