I have a 1957 Series One Landrover which is posative earth and I would like to fit an alternator to it but keep it posative earth.
I have been told that early Jaguars were posative earth and ran alternators. Can anybody confirm this and have any info on type and fittings?
Rory, The great majority of Jaguars were like your LR and carried Positive earth Generators. In terms of mass production, Jaguar switched to negative earth alternators with the XJ6 Series I. They did, however, experiment with a negative earth alternator briefly with the S-Type Police cars in 1967 and
1968. This was done because of the need for additional power demands these cars required. The alternators these cars used were a Lucas #23504. The odds of your finding one are remote at best. It IS, however, my understanding that you can take a modern negative earth alternator, and make it positive earth by reversing the heat sink diodes. Whilst I have never done it myself, I have been told by many an Austin Healey owner that any competent auto electrics shop can make the switch.Webserve
