80 CJ7 Falls on its face after half throttle

Sep 15, 2008 2 Replies

I have a 80 model CJ7 with 258. Runs great until you give it more than half throttle. Once you give it more than half throttle it acts like it floods out until you let off the pedal and then it runs fine again. We have changed the fuel filter, carburetor, spark plugs, and spark plug wires. Running out of ideas. Does anyone else have any?

Thanks, Scott

When the $2.00 air filter on my gas tank vent gets plugged up with mud or dirt, my 258 acts like you describe after driving for a short while. If I crack open the gas cap to let off the vacuum, it then runs normal.

The filter is on the bottom of the charcoal canister and is a bear to change the first time. Replacements just tuck in, but it took a hammer and chisel to get the first one out of mine.

A dead distributor cap and rotor will bog under load also. There are some bad ones out there, the rotors don't match the caps and arc out all over the place. A bright light is needed to look for carbon tracks inside the cap. They can even be white spiderweb like marks.
