83 cj7

I have a 83 cj7 with the 258 in it. No power steering with a 4 speed but I love it anyway. Anyway I have a oil problem but I can't seem to find a post that helps. I have a aftermarket stainless dash like most but the problem is around the cutout for the radio I have oil accumulating on the ledge there (I have no radio installed either). I can't figure out where it is comming from. It is mainly on that ledge and there is not significant deposits on the backs of the guages and such. I don't have any oil under the vehicle when its parked for a few days and my oil pressure seems fine. I have electric guages not mechanical. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Wow, sounds really mysterious. I'd spread out some paper towels behind the dash and go for a drive, see if I could collect some "evidence" to pin down where it's coming from.

Are you sure you don't have a mechanical oil pressure gauge? They are pretty common on CJ's. Mine is. If so, I would suspect the fitting is just loose.

If not, maybe it used to have one and the oil tube is still stuck up under the dash slowly dripping away?

Yep its mechanical and I am stupid. I cant believe I missed that. I saw some wiring and assumed way too much. Finally someone with some idea of what was falling out of his mouth showed me that it was machanical. Sorry, I am new to this. Thanks a lot though for trying to help me. Might not be the last dumb question I ask here, but now I will never confuse the two types of gauges again.

There aren't many stupid questions, just dumb answers....

Just so you know the Haynes CJ manual is an excellent one. It isn't expensive and is really accurate for most CJ stuff.

Not stupid, just ignorant, nothing wrong with that, ignorances can be cured, stupidity can't!

So have you solved your problem yet? Could be the fitting is loose, could be the gage itself. I had a a gage go bad years ago and it was actually leaking oil INSIDE the gage. (not in a Jeep, it was a Studebaker Hawk).

Jeff, Mike and David thanks for the responses. I did get it fixed, well I think. I am not sure how much pressure runs through that but when I got under the dash I was able to unscrew it by hand when I tested the connection. I put a bit of that pipe tape on the threads then but it back on with a wrench to snug it up. I haven't driven too far to see if it is going to hold but I am pretty sure if it does I can figure it out now that I know what is actually leaking. Been too long sitting in this clean office staring at a computer, bout time I get some grease and oil under my finger nails again.

You are welcome. Do you have the full gauges 'Laredo' chrome package? Mine has the chrome grill, all gauges including clock, chrome rims, stainless bumper and leather on the steering wheel and panic bar. I believe it was supposed to have a chrome dash plate too, but I got the dash stripped.

The 4.2 engine, if you have it, has some really strange emissions crap that has some well known quirks, so post here before spending money, lots of us know them pretty well.
