95 Sahara coolant not circulating

Good Morning.

My 95 Sahara 4.0 has a circulation problem. As I type this it is at the mechanic having a new water pump put on. I just spoke to him and he agreed there was a circulation problem. I did the thermostat, and the radiator is almost new. Could the impeller in the pump be damaged? He said they don't fail very often. If it a blockage in the engine, how do you remedy that? Would a system flush remove any obstructions? HELP!

Thanks,

Greg

There are 'two' versions of the waterpump. I have seen the correct box have the wrong pump inside.

You need a waterpump that specifically says 'reverse rotation' on it. It usually has a 'REV' cast into it's snout or at least an arrow pointing counterclockwise.

It also is 'not' unusual to get a bad thermostat right out of the box. At one point I was using a pot of hot water to test the damn things before installing.

I have also been told, but don't know this for sure, that if you manually 'try out' the new thermostat with your fingers, you can blow the seal on the wax container or introduce an air bubble to it so it won't work properly. As I say, this could be 'an old wives tale', I do not know.

I have also seen a pump impeller let go from the shaft, but then it got 'way' hotter than you report. You 'must' still have 'some' circulation.

One other one is the bottom rad hose is supposed to have a spring inside it or it can suck closed when hot restricting the flow.

Insufficient coolant, poorly maintained coolant ,and/or the wrong coolant can allow cavitation damage the impeller or eat through the impeller material.

Hey Thanks. I am expecting a call from the mechanic any time now with the damage report. Thanks for all the response. I am not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination nor do I have wads of cash spilling out of my pockets, so I try to gather as much info as possible to help me get through these problems I am having with it. I have only had this Jeep for a month or so and I want it running right. I really enjoy it!!

Thanks aga> Insufficient coolant, poorly maintained coolant ,and/or the wrong coolant

Get yourself a Factory Service Manual on paper or CD, you can use a Chilton's or Haynes for many things but the FSM is the best reference.

Ask Santa for some hand tools from Sears...(or Home Depot or Lowes or NAPA) Tools made in Red China will damage both your Jeep and yourself when they slip and break The first time you use a tool it will be paid for....a good basic tool set is about $100.

Most Jeep maintenance does not require a computer and thousand dollar black boxes .... just the same wrenching that your dad and grand dad performed...

Specialized tools are available for rent at many auto parts stores either at low or no cost (with a deposit)

If you have ANY interest in taking your Jeep off-road there are Jeep or 4x4 clubs everywhere with members who run everything from stockers to heavily modifieds.... generally speaking these guys (and gals) love to take things apart.

You can't get a basic tool set that *isn't* made in Red China for $100 ??
