Most Hydrogen is made from Methane gas etheir naturally occuring or from cracking crude. When you make Hydrogen from Methane you get Hyddrogen and Ammonia which is used in fertilizer production. They have been searching for years to fund a cheap way to split Hydrogen and Oxygem atoms apart in water for unlimited fuel source but right now it take more energy to make it han is recoverd when using water.

In the universe yes as stars and vast clouds of interstellar gas are made mostly of hydrogen but on the earth, free hydrogen in its native state is rare. Given the tempatures needed for it to because a liquid it is easy to see why. Hydrgen is a building block though is all fossil fuels but it is not in the form of free atoms.

The whole point of a Diesel engine is that you can get high compression ratios without needing high octane fuel. In fact, if you had high octane fuel that wouldn't self ignite, it wouldn't burn. Are you going to suggest putting spark plugs in a Diesel engine? :D

I would hazard a guess that the 2% Diesel is so that the fuel will burn.

IMHO, our best hope is to be able to separate them using a cheaper source of energy, such as sunlight, because then it doesn't matter whether we can recover all the energy that went into it.

Yup, and anyone can separate it from water, remember the two electrical probes we put in a glass, trapped the Hydrogen, and exploded a piece of magnesium in it. The justification for burning hydrogen is cleaner burning, but what no one mentions is it takes ceramic pistons and sleeves to withstand the much higher than the two thousand degree flash of gasoline, now. I'm not suggesting anything. I am merely stating that the fuel is available and it being used. I do not know anyone using it. I do know however, that diesels modified for performance and racing sometimes use a supplemental alcohol injection system, so apparently the two fuels do work well together. I am pretty much diesel ignorant beyond that.

It is more of a perception of things rather than a real firm law. If you apply that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes form to second law than that is valid. But then this is kinda like newtons law of motion in that for every action there is a equal reaction and the same with energy because its byproducts equal the sum of the energy being converted to work. It is called thinking outside the box.

I used to use a hundred percent alcohol, we drilled the jets out with a drill four times the size. So can see we pour in five to six time the fuel as gasoline, to go down the quarter mile. Needed a five gallon hand pressurized Moon tank to get to the other end. So it's like half the power of gasoline, but we can burns four times as much. And next is the dirty little secret that unless you burn it in a fuel cell, you get a lot of NOx and it is harder to reduce the combustion temperature to avoid the NOx than with gasoline. OK, so you could carry LOx and burn the hydrogen with that to avoid the NOx that comes from burning anything in an atmosphere pretty much mostly nitrogen.

And the energy for that electrolysis would have to come from cold fusion since otherwise you'd be getting it from the typical sources. Plus when you burn hydrogen in air, most folks forget about air being mostly nitrogen and you do NOT get the pure water the greenie monsters believe you will get.

Alcohol burns nicely in a diesel cycle, as any model airplane hobbyist would be aware of as they do the inevitable castor oil two step. Alcohol and nitromethane burn even better just before your engine melts.
