BEWARE of Slick Tops/California Tops

I feel the need to share my bad experience with Slick Tops (also called California Tops). I bought a halftop for my 1984 CJ-7 from their website in April '05 for about $520. The problem is that they never delivered it. I got a lot of empty promises from them and they told me again and again that it was almost ready to ship. Ten weeks later I still have nothing. They would not deliver the top and refused to refund my money. Fortunately, I paid with VISA. I notified VISA before 60 days had passed and VISA worked with me and has refunded my money. Slick Tops may be going under and can't fill their orders. I would advise anyone tempted to buy from them to spend your money elsewhere.

That is why Jeepers that know there product only use Bestop.... Since they are also the Manufacturer for the Originals anyway. Thanks for the info though. Sometimes we try to cut corners and sometimes it is good but there are areas that you just do not cut and the top is one of them. Bestop is the best for appearance durability and reliability. for the TJ's a raplacment top runs about $500.00 and if you watch 4 wheel parts you can catch a sale and save another $25 or so.

Has anyone had problems with Bestop low-back seats? My replacement low-backs are less than two years old and all the stuffing in the seat back is heading south. Leaning back I get the metal seat frame in my spine.

"Bestop doesn't make a halftop for a CJ-7. Slick Tops does.."

Educate me, what is it that slick makes that Bestop doesn't?

I'll try to make this as simple as possible. Please read ALL the words.

A CJ-7 is not a Wrangler. It's not a YJ. It's not a TJ. It's a CJ-7. A top for a Wrangler won't fit a CJ-7.

........Am I going too fast?

If you look at the Bestop site, you won't find a halftop for CJ-7's. If you look at the Slick Tops site, you will find a halftop for CJ-7's.

"Bestop doesn't make a halftop for a CJ-7. Slick Tops does." I don't know how I can be any clearer.

I wish I would have bought Bestop when I got my seats. Bestop has the good quality, judging from the products that I've bought from them so far. It's not quite OEM quality, but it's tons cheaper. I bought the, then, Steel Horse seats, which are now sold by Smittybuilt. They ripped fairly easily. I spent over $800 replacing my seats 2 years ago and now they're ripped in the seams in a couple of places. I'd suggest you buy Bestop. I've got nothing but good things to say about their products, and I've bought a few of them over the years.

Did I sound like a prick when I asked the question? Because you came off as a prick with your answer. The Internet etiquette is interesting, you would never say that to me in person, especially when I am spending my time trying to answer your questions. No need to get upset with me for slick tops poor website and poor customer service. Lighten up just a little.

Yeah make sure you type slow so we can all be on the same speed here. I ask because the bolded all caps description on

specifies a "'04 -'97". Is there a page on their site that specifies information for the CJ's and YJ's? They don't even show a picture that I can find of a CJ with a half top, my assumption is that since it fits the black and the yellow YJ, then it would also fit a CJ, but wouldn't you like to deal with a company that gave more specifics or even a photo of a CJ fit? The only indication I see is that they display a price, and on the order form you can pick a YJ/CJ option. Seems to me like they are vague on their CJ info.

My replacement seats _are_ Bestops, and the stuffing is sagging southward aften less than two years and minimal road miles. I was wondering if anyone else had had a problem with these seats since their other stuff is usually so well built.

Ben, this is a bikini top, and not a half top. A half top is an actual top, less the back section - almost like turning your Wrangler/CJ into a small truck. It actually closes in the front passenger compartment only, much like the soft tops on the Scramblers. Take a good look at these pictures and see for yourself:

When you asked the question, you sounded like somebody who was answering their own question. If I were talking to you in person, it would be a lot easier to communicate. The web page you listed does show two pictures of CJ-7's with a halftop. You may not have recognized them, but the most obvious difference is the roll bar. The CJ does not have a "cage". It's just a roll bar with a brace behind it. The page you listed shows a black CJ-7 with half-doors and a purple halftop. It also shows a yellow CJ-7 with full steel doors and a grey halftop. My Jeep has the steel doors, so I can get a pretty good look at how the top would fit if in fact any of them ever got delivered. On the order page you would specify that you owned a CJ and they would presumably build one to fit that model. But they won't.

I understand your questi>Did I sound like a prick when I asked the question? Because you came off

Sounds like we are on the same page. We are all here for a common topic and not to beat each other up. I apologize if my first post came across brash. This is now off topic, and not helping you find a top you want. But both the black jeep with purple top and the yellow jeep with the gray top both appear to be a 87-91 wrangler YJ's. On both you can see the side hinged tailgate, and the continuous flare/running board that was common with the YJ's from those years. I am sure you will see square headlights on both of them. Starting in 92 until 95 the YJ's had the extended rear sports bar. I still don't see a photo of a CJ on their site anywhere. Below are links to references.

As far as fit between the CJ's and the 87-91 YJ's the tops should all fit the same. The 92-95 YJ's the sport bar starts at a little different position, so my guess is that it would require a different top to get a proper placement. I think that Bestop does a better job at clarifying that their tops are for 92-95 TJ's, and SlickTops should clarify that there is a split in the YJ's. I guess they should also PRODUCE a top for a CJ/Older YJ since they advertise that they have one.

If you are replacing a top for a Wrangler the only one to use is a Bestop. They are the manufacturer for the OEM top as well.
