Brake Squeaks ??

Jul 22, 2004 2 Replies

Just had front brakes re-done, with new ceramic pads and turned rotors. They work fine.

Rear brakes were done about 15k ago, and they seem to work fine. (My understanding and experience is the rear brakes last much longer than the front). The braking in general is fine.

Now, I am on an extended vacation, and my brakes squeak when I depress the brake pedal. When I press down very hard (hard braking) the squeak goes away. I cannot tell if the sound comes from the front or rear.

Again, my brakes seem to be working fine, with no pulling either way, and the stopping power seems good, and even.

It will be several weeks before I will be back home, and could take the car to my regular mechanic, who always does a good job for me. Yet, I am am curious if I should have a stranger check my brakes to see if there is a problem.

Questions:

What is the likely culprit causing the squeak?

I have heard of "brake dressing." What is it, and when is it needed ?

Thanks for any helpful comments !!!!!!!!!!!
