CJ-7 stereo / radio

Any of you CJ / audio experts have advice on installing a standard (radio, CD) deck into that "way_to_small" access port in the CJ dashes ??? ..... my

1985 vintage radio / cassette deck finally packed it in ......... and in trying to find something that installs into that port looks futile in todays audio market.

Is you current dash mount the rectangle with a hole on either side for the knobs or a big rectangle?

In fact, (and this is ironic) .... it was a visit to Canadian Tire that spawned this ... i.e. I looked, ... I saw NOTHING that would fit, ....... and I said to my wife, "I'll just ask the boys in the news_group" :)

The latter ...... i.e. SMALL rectangle c/w holes (all part of a template)

Mine is a rectangle that fits a frame for the radio to slide in and out on. Pretty standard single level radio. I don't have the finished dash though so maybe yours has an add on template specific for the one radio? Mine is less than 5 years old I think.

They may gave to cut out the dash to enlarge the hole. The hole you have is probably smaller than a CD in size.

If you stop by your local Stereos-R-Us and talk to one of the installers thy can tell you what must be done.

Or

You may be able to get a new radio with the capability to control an external changer...

They actually sell the templates in plastic and some stereos just come with different ones to fit in different vehicles. The templates are stereo dependent, not vehicle dependent. The stereo my wife got me was just a universal that needed no template. It has a removable front plate for security and slides into a rectangle bracket which is the stock CJ7 size with no templates in the way.

yeah .... provided the vehicle has a 'slot' large enough to accomodate the unit. These older CJ's (and by the sounds of it they are not all the same) have a template BUILT INTO THE DASH STEEL ........ consisting of 2 holes and a rectangle to 'house' OEM radios (and as someone else has pointed out in here .... probably not even wide enough to accept a CD disc ....... let alone a CD player.

I figure a hack_saw, a dremmel and a drill will solve the problem :>)

The stereo my wife got me was

Who is the manufacturer ??????? Model ????

The hole is 7 1/4" by 2 1/8". This is a standard size for single deck units that slide in with a tool and a pin to release them out of the dash. The frame fits a 7"x2" stereo unit and the frame stays in the dash.

The stereo name is Urban U-75M. It has a cassette deck and AM/FM radio. No station presets though, I have to dial them in. It has 'nice' output sound. Clear even on the highway, roof or no top on too. I have a CD adapter for the cassette deck with a sports CD portable. No skip.

My dash has been stripped down though. The plate with the radio template and padding or chrome centerpiece and the top cover for the wiper is gone along with the forehead bumper.

I am thinking you have 2 plates in the center. One Jeep radio specific with the larger cutout under it.

But nothing a dremil and drill can't fix. Easier than cutting circles... ;-) I love those fiberglass reinforced cut off wheels CT has for the dremil.

I enlarged the hole with a hack saw and just used the "universal" installation kit supplied with the CD player. I've been very happy with my Kenwood 202-MR (Marine Radio). Others I had in there died after a matter of months due to the moisture or the occasional splashing during a heavy rain (I -really- took advantage of that Sears "extended warranty" :), or skipped very badly. I've had that Kenwood in there for three years or so. It rarely skips and doesn't seem to be impacted by the moisture, although I avoid using it when I know there's a high chance of water getting into that ever-so-well-fitting CJ cab design :).

If it were me, I'd mark off the proper size hold with masking tape -- partly to give a cutting guide and partly to protect the finish for when the cutter skates across the paint on the first attempt. I'd use my 4

1/4" angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel. Your tools may vary.

Oh, and before I made my cut I'd eyeball the back of the dash to be sure that there were brackets or stiffeners in the way.

*claims* there is a unit that will fit. In the search box type 1985 jeep and it takes you to another page where you can select the actual year model and such. In the past, they've pretty good at fitment and kits, if a bit higher priced than some mail order competition.
