Here's one for ya'. I got a '76 CJ-7 and want to put a radio in it. (Okay, Bill I know "Real Jeep's don't have radios! Haha! Just gotta stir the pot.) But does anybody still make 'em? What's the style of radio head? Just don't know what to search for on the net. I've got a radio from a Comet but it's still too big and the only other box I got's a Roadmaster, which is fine in terms of quality. Other than that, what'd you do for a stereo? Drink
1.) There are lots of radio opportunities around here. Even in the desert.
2.) He has a standard radio cut out in the dash for any of the off-the-shelf head units on the market today.
3.) Assuming trouble getting a radio station in the middle of nowhere, it is next to impossible to NOT find a radio today that is without a cassette or CD.
I would NEVER put a radio where I could not see and operate the controls EASILY.
I'd recommend finding a radio you want then cutting your dash to size. If cutting your dash is not an option, there are a number center consoles that have space for a stereo. Just make sure the stereo can handle the moisture content present in most CJs.
My Scrambler switches to a bikini top in the summer, so after burning about about four radios (for the price of one - that'll teach 'em to sell me an extend warranty at Sears :), I went to Cabelas and bought a Kenwood marine radio. It's about five years old now, and has been through high water and rain. It rarely skips, even off road. The only problem is that the CD eject mechanism now sometimes needs a little help (not bad for its age and abuse). Marine radios costs quite a bit more than a feature equivalent non-marine stereo, but I'll never put a non-marine stereo in my Scrambler again.

My 86's dash has a template inserted to fit a "Jeep" radio. With this removed, I have a rectangle hole that fits a standard single height push in radio. The kind you insert the box frame into the dash and slide the radio into the box frame that they sell as a standard size at any stereo shop. I have a removable face stereo installed that my wife picked up off the shelf.
I also have bought radios that insert directly to the dash. The kind that come with various templates to fit various holes.

The XM was never used in the Jeep, not that that matters. I'm pretty sure truckers are using satellite these days, and a relative few of them rely on the AM band. But, that is beside the point. The OP has a standard size hole in his dash that will accomodate any standard radio, including those with a built in CD or cassette.
Actually, he doesn't - but nothing a hacksaw (metal blade on a jigsaw) can't rectify .... it's a 5 minute job which not only opens the dash hole, but opens up infinitely more possibilities wrt products which can be 'fitted'
My 86 CJ7 'does' have this 'standard' opening in the dash....
