That would imply a vacuum leak to me. I would be checking all the lines for one off. Mike 86/00 CJ7 Laredo, 33x9.5 BFG Muds, 'glass nose to tail in '00 88 Cherokee 235 BFG AT's

That sounds about right for N or P, but a bit high for D. It sounds good for a cold motor that hasn't come up to temp yet, but not for a car that has just come off the freeway. Having said that, it is controlled by the engine management system, and there's a good chance you can't change it simply by twisting on a screw or two.
elvishasrisen did pass the time by typing:
600rpm is "normal" but that depends on if the AC is running and if you have the I6, V8 is probably around 800.There is no way to set the idle rate manually, no screws to twiddle with or knobs to turn. High idle indicates a vac leak. Likely culprit is the line running to the CCV (back of the valve cover to the intake rail), but any of the soft parts can get old and split. A bit of TB cleaner sprayed on them will let you know by making the engine stammer.
Also clean the throttle body, the idle control motor is probably gummy.
