fan switch

If you can help..... I have a tj sport, 2003. the interior fan only blows at high. The heater is fine. I'm hopping that it only needs a switch replacement (which I also hope I can do myself)... has anyone else come across this? many thanks Mike

Your switch should be fine, the fan has a direct line on high. There is a resistor pack that controls the lower speeds and when it is burned out you get your symptoms.

I think someone posted here about actually replacing the thermal fuse unit inside the pack that sometimes blows rather than just buying a new pack, but most folks just replace them.

The resistor pack is located at the bottom of the heater air box in the passenger side footwell. I think there is a plastic cover on it that comes off with one or maybe two screws. Our Cherokee is one screw to loosen and a slot on the second.

Sometimes when this resistor pack blows, it is because the heater motor is wearing out and drawing too many amps.

this is a common problem.. it has NEVER been the resistor in any of my Jeeps.. it is the control panel with the tree switches.. i buy them from jeep they are about 65 my cost and take 10 minutes to replace!

Did they make a bad run of panels?

I know there is a recall if the heater doesn't work on some because the dash grounds come loose.

What are 'tree switches' and what part is actually bad?

You need not replace the entire panel. The dealer parts people will argue the point but if you make them drill down in the parts catalog you can replace just the 4 way switch and not the entire panel . About

14$ and an additional 5 minutes work. Joe Carroll

So they are making crappie switches now, that's a drag.

Unusual for the lower powered lines to die though, usually it's the high that takes out the input contact....

At least the OP can check his resistor pack before opening the dash.

I had a sharp parts fellow explain to me that I didn't need the whole panel, just the switch. He then suggested I check it out in the parking lot if I could. Sure enough it was bad right out of the box and he got me another. It lasted about a year. I stopped at another dealership to get one and the parts guy swore that the only way I could replace it was to buy the whole panel. Only after some significant prodding did he drill down and find out it wasn't necessary. Needless to say I haven't gone back there for anything else... Joe Carroll
