Grand Cherokee rollover transmission failure

Is the transmission still full of fluid? Is the transfer case engaged?

Hello again,

The car was still at an angle in the ditch, and the transmission fluid level seemed completely empty. When we towed it back onto level ground, and put a couple of litres in it - Hooray! The car moved. Thanks! But I can't get any more fluid as everything is closed, and the dipstick still doesn't show any level, so it must be fairly empty. How much fluid should I need to put in, it has the 4 litre petrol engine, and given that it drives, though sometimes doesn't engage the gears as well as before, what are the risks of driving it not full of transmission fluid? Thanks again! BTW -What is the transfer case?

You will burn out the transmission in less than a couple miles likely if you drive it low and slipping. You can blow it if you put too much in too.....

The dipstick will say on it how to check it. Likely hot running and in neutral or park, but I can't read it from here....

The transfer case is the 2 and 4 wheel drive transmission.

Since there is no way to know how much fluid ran out, there is no way to know how much you need to replace. I could guess and say "buy three liters", but that would be just a guess. It's an educated guess. ;^)

The transfer case is a mechanical gear box, located immediately to the rear of the transmission, that controls four wheel drive. Fluid could have run out of it too. You have to crawl under the vehicle to check it. Depending on how far you had this vehicle rolled over, the axles could have lost fluid too. You should check the engine oil too. "All" fluid levels should be checked, before the vehicle is driven any distance.

Most gas stations and other 24 hour stores stock transmission fluid. Do NOT drive the Jeep while it is low on transmission fluid. Buy a few liters (3-5), and slowly add fluid untill the level is full. Drive the Jeep for a bit (maybe 1/2-1mile) and check it again.
