Now you have one thousand and ONE uses for a dead cat. :-:

On another cat note, this afternoon we went for a drive down on the 'bottoms' after it rained hoping to find a little mud to play in found nothing but puddles and decided to try across the highway alongside the river. The entrance was blocked off by a couple of vehicles but when we stopped to see if we could squeeze in I saw some movement in the brush. It was a kitten, about 8 weeks old. Soaking wet from the thunderstorm, out in the middle of nowhere. obviously had been dumped off.

I pointed it out to my daughter - mistake number one. First I said "no stray critters" but the little thing looked pitiful. Soaking wet, little and hungry. I told her she would likely not be able to catch it - mistake number two. She stepped out of the Jeep to go see if it could be captured, it saw her, came bounding out of the brush and JUMPED into her arms and proceeded to purr like a little motor. Mistake number three - we brought it home and fed it because it's little bones are sticking out so badly that it was likely very close to starving to death.

Who the hell could dump out a little critter knowing it cannot survive and knowing it would starve to death? A gunny sack and a rock would have been more humane. People are so stupid.

Tonight, she is going to the fair, the Humane Society has a booth there. Kitten shall go with her, to hopefully find a new home. In the meanwhile, it has crowded our full grown cat out of her dish and bed and there is some concern from the other fur bearing member of the family.

Some concern from this ol momma too. Like I NEED or WANT another cat... geeze! I have ONE that's more than enough.

99% of them die in duress and the other 1% (usually dumped older than 8 weeks) form the nuclei of feral cat colonies, which are semi-wild critters wreaking unimaginable havoc with the ecosystem.

"Shoot, shovel, and shut up" is my motto when coming across unowned domestic cats.

Is the gunny sack and rock for the kitten or the former owner?

I would vote for the former owner

This little thing has great manners, is already litter trained and even comes when she is called. She is so happy to have people around. Feral, she aint.

I agree with much of what you say, I just didn't have the heart. I'll either find her owners, or a new home.

If nothing else, my cat can teachher to hunt mice and they can work together to keep the varmints at bay around our place. Out in the fields we have all sorts of varmints that cats can catch. My other cat is a good hunter and definitely earns her keep.

Out here in the country, cats are pretty much ok. Within limits.

BUT

IF she stays, she will be spayed before her first heat.

LOL Both perhaps!

I'd like to find them, and give them a sample of their own medicine. Mind you I am not a tree hugger, nor am I an animal righst nut or any of that crap BUT there is such a thing as respect for life and responsible pet ownership.

We live a 'fur piece', (roughly 20 miles) from the nearest 'big' town and it is only about 5,000 people. Critters are dumped out in this area a lot. Usually dogs or puppies.

LOL Aargh... that was REALLY bad.

So many cats, so little ammunition...

Let me make this purrfectly clear..I'm not a cat person, OK? Heck, I don't even like dogs all that much although we have 4 of them. That being said, I'd have probably drug the little kitten home with me too. Not it's fault it was born, and shouldn't have to die like that.

Bet that's really comical. The young respect no boundries, and take what they want regardless of what the adults have to say about it...hmm, sounds like my kids ;-). I always said that baby animals are cute so that their parents won't kill and eat them.

That's us with dogs...of the 4(yes, I said 4!), all except 1 were left with us by our sons when they couldn't take care of them where they lived. The one that wasn't dropped, was given to my wife as a birthday present by another of my sons...Thanks, kids.

OMG! What timing for a dead cat post...we've got a 5 yr old cat that has gone dirty for some reason...it just started shittin' and pissin' everywhere but the litter box...there hasn't been any changes around the house and the vet says the cats health is fine....I woke this morning to find that it had left a puddle in the kitchen, one in the dining room and crapped at the bottom of the stairs after I spent half a day yesterday washing the floors before my wife comes home tonight (she's Navy and only home on weekends)...This is the final straw...but it's our families cat and I know my poor 7 yr old daughter is gonna be very hurt that she's gone, as iis the wife...even as much as I've had all I can take it's not going to be easy to get rid of her... The vets want $80. to put her down...at this time I just can't afford $80. to have this thing put down...I thought maybe if I had a gun I could take her somewhere and do it myself, but no gun!...grrrrr what do I do?? I then thought sufficate it in a plastic bag or sumptin'...strangle it? and then again, I'm not sure I have the heart to do that...I need a fast easy way that I can live with....frustrating! What am I to do??

Me either, trust me on this one. I'm not even a critter person, though I grew up with the whole barn yard. Horses, cows, dogs, cats a few chickens.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel. Though this morning it's not even 7 a.m. and it wants to play.

Huh... cat somehow did NOT go to the fair with daughter last night. and I missed it. Hmmmmmm... something stinks.

*disgusted look* You mean... we had the OPTION? Is it too late? Oh mannnnnn.... *grabbing the BBQ sauce* Lets see, I will start with the youngest daughter and then her offspring, then move on to....

Oh man, that is just so wrong. When can they take them back? My other cat was a rescuee too. My eldest is a veterinary nurse, she saved it, when it's eyes were not yet open. It grew, it needed a home, I had a weak moment.

Find a local animal shelter and make a donation that you can afford. Most will have flexibility in what you can pay. ASK.

Most normal people don't want to give themselves the memory of killing a live creature. Conscience matters, some don't have it, some don't care. You don't sound quite that callous, yet.

But fundamentally, $80 at $16 over 5 years is pretty damned cheap for something your family has loved. Either place it with a shelter or stop being cheap.

4X4PLAY did pass the time by typing:

Did you change the cat litter brand recently or is the box dirty? I've found some cats do not like certain brands of litter. Changes in food and even stress in the house can change kitty's behavior.

Moving the litter box closer to where the cat usually stays also works, but that is more for the older cat that can no longer walk long distances.

Rather than putting the cat down, how about finding it a new home.

"wkearney99" got it right:

Good one. There has to be an ASPCA / Humane Society shelter near where you live and they'll take the animal for whatever you can donate.

About four years ago some jerkoff dumped the cat I currently have out here in the woods. After nearly starving to death he was lucky to have found my back door one night. He was also lucky not to have been either run over or eaten by a coyote, mountin lion, bobcat, owl, you name it.

The cat's doing something perfectly normal, all you have to do is fogure out what it's trying to tell you..which can be an SOB to figure out. The cat's trying to tell you something, you may want to start by trying a new cat box and a different brand of litter. Imagine yourself having to crawl into a bunch of nasty, clay-like stuff that stinks and sticks to your feet..and add two more feet to worry about!

I agree with the others. SOMETHING has changed to changed causing your cat to act out. You can figure it out if you keep trying.

It might even be that you are stressed over what's going on and been giving her hell.

Like others have said, be sure that littler is clean, that it's the right kind or that other factors have not changed in even a subtle way. Ask your wife when she gets home.

Killing the cat should be a last resort, one I would not opt for. Cats will do this if they are pissed off too. I had one do it to me once when I moved her kitty tree from one side of the room to another.

I think it is a matter of personal honesty and living in accordance with reality. Life and death is reality. I think a pet-keeper should have the willingness to face the truth, the personal honor, that pulling the trigger on Fido or Morris entails. I made my baby sister shoot her cancer-ridden Maltese herself. I think the need to "have it done" is cowardly in a sense.
