Backlash is a measure of how tightly the ring gear meshes with the pinion. You should be able to rotate the ring gear back and forth about ten thousandths of an inch without turning the pinion. Without enough backlash the gears will jam and fail when they heat up and expand. Too much backlash will cause the gears to howl and wear prematurely.
