Mounting Autometer gauges.

Jul 19, 2004 5 Replies

Hey all,

I need to mount the Autometer fuel gauge on my CJ7 dash and need hints on how to cut this out. These are the 2" (or 2 1/8") gauges. What's the best tool to cut through the dash on a CJ7?

Thanks,

Bill

I've seen these saws but thought they were for wood, not metal. Are they wood and light metal, metal only, or wood and can be used for light metal?

No, on the 1k worth of gauges. I've only got two so far (mechanical oil pressure and fuel) and probably will get only one more for temp gauge for now.

These guys have good prices:

That's "mechanical oil and electronic fuel" for clairity.

William Oliveri did pass the time by typing:

Not bad.

And yes, your basic hole-saw from the hardware store will work on the soft metal in your dash >IF< you keep the saw lubricated.

Always watch behind the hole, you don't want to slash a harness.

No, there are plenty for use on metal. Just go to Home Depot and look around. You'll find quite a selection (in the power tool/bits section). I used one for cutting a hole through my ABS shelf (1/8" steel) when mounting my on-board-air stuff there. Works great. Just make sure not to forget to get a center-mount bit for it! ;-)
