Oil pressure sensor?

I just bought a '99XJ Sport w/ 4.0L yesterday. It runs great, like new, but I noticed this morning that when I start it the oil guage is pegged max up to 80. it does go down when warm to about normal (30-60) but shoots up max to 80 again when moving or reving the engine. My old '89XJ would run about in the middle of the guage (40) as I'm sure it is supposed to? I'm sure it's just a bad sensor? where is it located? I'm sure it's fairly easy to replace myself, what is the proper ft/lb torque putting it back in? (or does it matter?)

Sounds like you have a frayed wire that is allowing an occasional short which pegs the gauge.

Bishoff did pass the time by typing:

sensor or connector. 0 = short 80 = open First thing I'd do is pull the connector, clean it and reinstall.

it's like the 93 4.0 yours is down on by the oil filter. There is no real torque given for installation since you can't get a torque wrench on it anyway. :) I just run it down by hand then turn it in with a wrench till it feels snug. If it leaks you just turn it in a bit more then check later. A dab of sealant around the last few threads helps.

Ok here's a question. I went and found the sensor and tried to unplug it to clean it but it is a new kind of connection I have never seen before. Seems all the connections (most) have these new (black with a red thing on them) Does it slide (red thing) to lock them? what is the correct way to disconnect / connect without breaking them?, (which I am famous for)
