Steering question

I think my power steering box/pump is about to die. The box is leaking fluid from the top where the steering shaft enters, and the jeep shakes whenever I turn the wheel from a dead stop. Also, the idle goes down a couple hundred rpms whenever I turn the wheel from a dead stop. Any ideas? Thanks.

I was just quoted $1200.00 for a new power steering box, installed for my '00 TJ.

It's not hard to put a kit in them.

You can buy just the top bearing and seal or the whole thing.

I helped Steve put on in his YJ, we did the top end on the vehicle, we just dropped the pump down and left the pitman hooked up so we didn't damage the bottom seal or tie rod end on the drag link.

The dealer wasn't interested in repairing the unit (new seals) so I wasn't confident he had anybody with the experience to repair it.

With 86,000 miles on it, I didn't know what would be found inside the unit. I have no tools because I have no place work (I rent downtown) or store solvents, and other good stuff.

That's BS for labor.

I was on this group and Steve was commenting on taking off the pitman to do a top seal and I said Woah! He didn't live far so I went over and it was about an hour's job taking our time.

Dropping the box makes it easy to disconnect the steering column shaft, the rest 'all' stays in place, hoses, everything. He had already tried taking off hoses and parts were starting to break.

It's just a seal, a big nut, a couple washers and a bearing. Pretty easy, a 'one banana' job.
