transmission problem

I have a 2000 Jeep Comanchee Sport, 4 lt, auto ,part time 4x4. It has 90,000km (55,000 miles) Lately it doesn't want to come out of 4 wheel drive while on the move. When I shift back into 2 wheel drive while moving it stays in 4 wheel drive until I either stop or make a sharp corner. Then it goes back into 2 wheel drive. Sometime applying the breaks sharply will put it back in 2 wheel drive but not always. Sometimes when it goes in 2 wheel drive I can hear a slight clunging sound. If I put it in reverse while stopped it also goes back into 2 wheel drive. If I'm driving off road it shifts back and forth normally and I feel that is because it is turning quite a bit. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this.

If you're using part time 4wd on the road, that's what's doing it. You're lucky you haven't broken something yet. Your drive train is binding up and the transfer case can't shift. Never (read: NEVER) use part time 4wd on the road unless it's covered with packed snow or ice or something else that lets your tires slip. Part time

4wd locks the front and rear drive shafts together. Your front and rear wheels don't go the same distances, especially on turns, which causes binding unless one or both can slip, like on dirt or packed snow.

I don't use the four wheel drive unless the roads a re slippery. It does this on snow packed roads.
