What happens on a Roll over

Also, what do you think about the support weld (4th picture down)?

You got to think about what kind of 'wheeling you do and what you want to protect. If you want to protect your precious windshield, you'll need one of these hideous-looking external rollcages. Whether they really protect anything is anyones guess...

The most common off-road rollovers are having the jeep go on the side, often in slow motion. A rollover over the front is pretty rare, but has a lot more energy to destroy anything. If that happens, the windshield is going to be the least of your worries...

If you get it on the roof, the main worry is to protect the occupants heads from rocks, tree stumps, limbs etc. sticking through the rollcage. That's why the spaces you talk about are a bad idea. Others even cover the top of the rollcage with metal netting, etc.

To me it looks like there is a seat mounted in the bed, which is probably one reason for the rear bar.

Also, in that first pic, would the back roll bar really be needed?

I'm thinking about this kind of option as I want to put the CJ8 half cab on my CJ7.

Another thing. Back in the "days" we used to go hunting in the jeep. It seems we always liked to stand up in the passenger seat to get a better view of what we were going over. Therefore I would think I would like spaces in the roll cage to allow for driver or passenger to stand up at any given time (not necessarily during rock crawling but at other times). With the cage in the pic it would be difficult to stand up.

Any feedback on this idea?

The roll cage is only there to protect you and your passenger(s). You will get body damage... no avoiding that. And, yes the windshield most always goes, even if you just put in on it's side. If you want to still be able to get a hard-top on the front roll bar has to be below the windshield. If your back roll bar is already in there, why take it out... all the more protection.

I like the one for the CJ5 at the bottom of the page better.

I have had my CJ7 over on it's side twice and only cracked the seam where the firewall meets the floor on my 'glass body and knock the body

Then again I don't do radical rock climbs like those western USA fools, we just slide off the trails on ice or snow up here... ;-)

My windshield frame bent at the hinges, actually at the plates that the hold-downs are mounted to. It would have folded into my lap except it hit the forward bar of the roll cage. Had I gone around again, and again, I don't know what would have happened, but I am fairly certain it would not have been nearly as pretty as it turned out.

I rolled to the side, then while on the roof I turned about 90° so that I completed the roll by going over ... You know? I don't remember what happened, exactly. I have gussets under the footwells, so I assume the kinks would have been much worse.

My roll cage is essentialy the same as this one. I would like to draw you attention to the hand holds in the upper corners. I think these hand holds are potentially dangerous where they are because the hands are exposed to passing rocks and otheer stuff that will be on the ground if the roof is ever on the ground too. I would like to see those hand holds come from the forward bar to the member that connects the forward and the rear bars. The hand hold that is there is OK for comfort and ease of grabbing for any kind of normal ride, but if the ride gets wild, the passenger should have another alternative to hang on to.

So far so good on the Jeep. Turns out the winch is dead. They think its electrical. I suspect either my battery is dead and or the isolator isnt doing its job. Hadnt used it in a month or two prior to New Years. Once this weather is gone and I can get into the metro area I have a couple of people willing to troubleshoot it for me. The drivers door is giving me pains...it just doesnt fit quite right. The door seal keeps peeling off on the bottom. I am no longer sure how to go about fixing this...we have adjusted the bottom of the hinge (several times). Its a real pain, since snow blows into the Jeep and piles on the drivers seat. I parked that side away from the wind so that should help a little.

Yep, we are in the mess. Couple of feet of snow, ice on top of it. Freeway and Hwy are both shut down (thats all we got here, one hwy on the WA side, and one freeway on the OR side). Work has been closed for 2 and a half days. Yea!!! Now I dont have to worry about that until Monday...unless of course they call me out of something goes down, but I sort of doubt that. We only have a handful of people there, operators who run 24-7, and some garage crew folks to plow the road for the operators. I could get there with no problem, but there is no reason for me to go in. I should go outside and get some of the ice off the Jeep and run it up to temp today, but...I think I may be lazy and wait for tomorrow instead. Yesterday I went out and visited some neighbors - checking up on them - and walked around a bit. It was nasty out. We are up to the highest temp we have seen since before New Years...a whooping 22 degrees today (which beats the hell out of 7 any day). The cold isnt so bad, its the wet that goes with it. We are not use to seeing single digit temps here. Oh yea...the wind is just our buddy right now...gusts have been measured up to

Actually, what worries me is if we get a "pineapple express" coming thru - they say it will be worse than the floods of 1964...which made the 1996 floods look like somebody just dropped a bucket.
