Willys Pickup

I am looking at buying a Willys Pickup. I am ready to buy, however I was hoping I could get some advice on what price I should expect to pay. I want to be able to deal with confidence. For example, if a guy is asking $4000 for a truck, how could I tell if it is really only worth $2500?

I guess what I am asking is what should I expect from a truck that is worth $1000, $2000, $4000, $6000, etc...

Rather than picking a number out of thin air (blue book), research the vehicle in something like the auto/truck trader, and see what similar vehicles are actually selling for. I usually check a range of 3 years, and throw out the top ten as greedy dealers, then base the price of the vehicle on condition, within the price range of what's out there.

I purchased my '62 pickup (mostly original, barely running and in fair condition) for $900. My parts truck (rough botched up conversion) was $75. You can book out a Willys pickup on the NADA site under "Classic Cars". Here's the link:

Ultimately, supply and demandand what you're willing to pay will determine price. Decide what you want to do with the truck. Do you want a faithfully restored original? If so, buy one that's all original with the best body you can find. If you're planning a repower/conversion, either look for a truck that's rough (like mine) or one that's already been modified. When you look at a truck, inspect it carefully. If you're unsure of what to look for, have a mechanic check it out for you.

If you're not already active on it, I highly recommend the Willys Tech list/website:

Nice looking truck, Dave. Brian, hit eBay and search eBay motors for Willys and see what's actually selling. Just because someone asks $10,000 for a truck doesn't mean it'll sell for that. Only really pay attention to the auctions that have bids and are ending in a couple days or less. Those are the ones that will give you a realistic idea what you're looking at for prices.

Also, check out the ads on the WillysTech.Com website. All the Willys freaks check in there regularly.

Good luck, - Jeff G
