Wiring a horn

Hi all,

83 CJ7, 258, I6

I'm trying to wire an air horn which was on my jeep when I bought it but never hooked up correctly.

I have the following diagram I've been using to hook it up and I have a couple of questions.

Q1: From the positive battery pole to the 30 pole on the switch, I don't have this wire. Is this something I should fabricate or can I buy it?

Q2: Where do I find the wire which goes to the 85 pole from the wiring harness? Where would the single pole, double throw switch be? Under dash or behind firewall? Should I also fabricate this wire or should it be in the wiring harness?

Thanks for any help,

Bill

One other thing. When I press on the horn I hear a clicking noise but I can't narrow down it's location. Is this the single pole double throw switch?

Thanks,

Bill

Q1: Yes, if you don't have some sort of wiring harness that came with the new air horn, you will have to make that wire and any other that is missing. Q2: The only stock wires available would be from the horn button to the stock horns. The switch would normally go under or on the dash and is only necessary if you want to maintain use of the stock horn.

Don't I need the switch to activate the air horn? How else would this happen?

Thanks,

If you don't want the switch, take the horn button wire straight to 85 on the relay. The clicking sound you hear may be the relay.

The clicking sound is coming from under my dash. I listened outside in the engine compartment and I couldn't hear it that well. It sounds like it's coming from around the light switch but sounds play tricks on you under there.

How do I find the horn button wire?

Thanks,

Bill

Then you are hearing the OEM horn relay. I would take the wire off the stock horn and put it on the air horn and be done with it. Or alternatively, take the wire off the stock horn and put it on the new air horn relay position 85.

There is usually a delay with air horns.. your stock horn will sound before the air trumpets do anything.. dump your stock horn and attach the horn feed to the compressor..

That's the problem. I don't have the stock horn either and I don't know which wire should go to it. I had previously thought the same thing but couldn't find the right wire.

I found it!! Thanks guys. It's a red wire with a white stripe. I just hooked it up to the positive terminal of the air horn and away we go..

Thanks,

Here is a good link on how to wire a relay:

The clicking you hear is from the stock Jeep relay which is way up on the back center of the dash plate.
