1983 2.5D 110 LWB Electric problems.

Friend has asked about a problem that has just occurred with his 110 Van which he uses for his work. Last night he turned off the ignition, removed the key, and the red ignition light came on and stayed on and the engine continued to run. He stopped the engine by stalling it but still the ignition light was on and this morning ...nothing. The battery has drained overnight. Any ideas? New ignition switch needed?

Tow bar electrics are a favourite for this kind of problem, the switch is possible but unlikely. Essentially anything on the vehicle that has permanent and ignition switched feeds can cause it - event the radio !

Tow bar electrics would be my first port of call as the socket(s) "live" in a hostile environment and I've seen some really strange results of shorts in the socket including lights that come on with the ignition ( also meant that you couldn't turn the engine off if you had the side lights switched on !).

I'd be surprised if the ignition switch would cause this unless the switch has come away from the key barrel. An electrically faulty switch normally fails the other way leaving you without ignition.

Chances are the alternator is faulty that's why the ignition light is on seen this on cars and trucks a few times

disconnect the alternator wires start the engine the turn it off if it still won't turn of the alternators ok and the fault lies else where

Yes, it's a sign of a blown diode pack, but I ruled that out as it doesn't allow the engine to keep running without the ignition key...

Radio? In a real Landrover? What's that? :-)

Right, I know that when he bought it the vehicle had been used to tow boats and he found the towing electrics plug full of dried mud when he looked. (and the back axle full of water) It would be a good place to start then.

Point taken.

Thank goodness for that, 'cause that alternator sound a bit expensive.

That reminds me of when I used to go caravanning and how much time I used to spend getting all the lights to funtion correctly in the van before I left because of wierd shorts (no not the ones I was wearing) and reverse flows.

Make sure you disconnect all the alternator wires...
