Defender "Headlining".... suggestions anyone ??

G'day LR trimmers and restorers.. :)))

My 6 year old plus Defender 110 has the dreaded 'headlining breakdown' disease !! this 'formed cardboard crap' is parting with the fabric surface at a rapid rate. And the _cardboard_ is pretty crappy, ya gotta admit!! I reckon pretty soon I'll be wearing it as a hat !

Any ideas ??

eg's . 1. Scrap the lot and just have metal roof ? 2. Take off the cardboard and 'recover it' and then replace ? 3. Take off the cardboard and replace with foam sheet or thick fabric fixed ( 'stuck') to the metal roof ? ( This last is my first choice as it might 'quieten' the running sounds down somewhat !!!) 4. something else that I haven't thought of yet ??? :)))

Maybe someone has successfully replaced their headlining in some manner ( or seen someone else's efforts) and can offer me some 'pointers' before I 'fly blind' :)))

Looking forward to any comments, suggestions, experiences.

I'm not sure what your liner is made of...but I replaced mine on a RR.

Pulled headliner out. Scraped old adhesive off liner. Purchased some fabric from the local supply ($3.50 US) and a can of 3M upholstery adhesive ($9.00 US). Laid out fabric. Then rolled it up. Then lay down some glue....roll some fabric....smooth out wrinkles....glue...unroll...smooth....

To make it more interesting I added some foam padding in the shape of sharks and glued them to the panel before unrolling fabric. The kids like seeing the sharks above them, I think they ended up looking more like dolphins myself, whatever.

Approximately 1 day start to finish.

Frodo Hi,

If the cardboard material of your headlining is not damaged you can remove the headlining, peel the fabric off and attach new fabric (or synthetic leather). Best results can be achieved by using sprayable glue (sold in a pressurized can)

If the cardboard material is damaged and breaking you may be able to save it if you again peel off the fabric and cover it with epoxy. The epoxy will harden on it and will give it some resistance to further cracking.

If you remove the headlining maybe it would be worth to paint the metallic part of the roof with the "Noisekiller liquid" It does work on insides of fenders and doors so it must also be doing some job on metallic roofs (have not removed the headlining on my Discos yet to apply it)

Hope this helps Take care Pantelis

On the last couple of Land Rovers we have had we have stuck carpet on. Works really well. On the 90 we have at the mo it has a genuine front half headlining so we stuck carpet on just the back half. Take a peek:

Next time you respray a Land Rover, I'd recommend removing any small children first.

G'day again LR trimmers and restorers.. :))

Thank you for the replies to my 'headlining replacement' query.

I'm now looking around for some suitable 'covering' material for the 'form'. I intend to cover it and then stick it back up....... we'll see how _that_ goes as "Plan 'A' ". Failing that , I'll chuck the 'cardboard form and stick some sort of lining right onto the metal ( Plan 'B' ) !!

Can I lay just one more question on you... :)))

I had a closer look at the flat pins that hold the current lining in place. .... The ones around the edges seem to be the 'peg type' that just prise out.... but what about the ones in the centre of the lining ??? How do I get to the _back_ of these to 'pop' them out and release the lining from the roof ??? .... And any other 'pointers' for removing/replacing the lining, special tools? , sequence of removal/replacement etc ??

Thanks again....

On my Rangie the grab holds and rear cargo light held the liner in place. The only push style pins I had were in the rear.

Sorry, Jack.
