2.5 needs new timing chain & tensioner

My 1986 2.5 petrol need a new timing chain and tensioner, looks straightforward if you remove the rad but am I kidding myself? Anyone done same and got any tips? Will a normal sprocket puller do or do I need a specialist tool?

I think it's the same as the 2 1/4, if you remove the tensioner you can just lift the chain off the sprockets, no puller needed.

Thanks for that info. A quick look at Paddocks shows the Chain and tensioner to be the same part numbers for both engines so looks like the job just got a little easier. :-)

Anything else I should replace while I'm in there?

ERR 6490 Front oil seal and check 275234 chain damper for wear.

Thanks, the damper is pence so I'll just order one while I'm about it, it's also a good time to replace the belts. But that Oil Seal number you quote is for the Diesel, the ones for the 2.5 petrol are either ERR1632 (single lip) or ETC5187 (double lip) according to Paddocks. How can I tell which I need to order, engine number is 17H06489C ?

Sorry Bob, late night last night, I can look it up but Paddocks will know which one off that engine number.

Bad form to follow up on my own post but the single lip seal you quote (ERR1632) supercedes ERC7987 from the original microfiche and both numbers supercede to ERR6490 which is the one I quoted and is the correct number for your engine unless you have air-con fitted whereby you will need seal number

90516028.

ETC5187 (the double lip seal) is obviously a modification and better seal and is fitted from 1987 onwards and no doubt can be fitted instead of any of the first three numbers from the previous paragraph (unless of course you have air-con fitted) but I've no idea why this should be different apart from the fact that the pulley will also be different.

Thanks Martin. I'll have a word with Paddocks to confirm the two lip one will fit.
